Study & Work Program in San Diego

English for Career Development is a program run and certified by the University of San Diego’s English Language Academy for international students aged 18+ with a minimum English level of B2 who wish to improve their Business English skills prior to gaining valuable hands-on experience in an authentic English-speaking business environment.

Program Overview

  • 4 weeks of General and Business English at ELA
  • 6-8 weeks of professional internship in a local company

Program Requirements

  • minimum age 18
  • B2 / IELTS 6.0 English level or higher
  • High-school or College transcripts
  • evidence of study or practical experience in the relevant area of business
  • applications should be submitted at least 12 weeks prior to the program start date
  • Skype interview with Academic Manager & Career Counsellor
  • I-20 issued by USD for F1 visa

Program Details

During a Skype interview with the Academic Manager and Career Counsellor, the applicants’ English level and suitability for their chosen area of business will be assessed. Successful applicants will begin by following a 4-week English language course at the university’s English Language Academy. The course consists of 20 lessons per week (17.5 hours) of General English and 5 lessons (3 hours) of Business English. Maximum class size is 20 but the current average is no more than 12. Upon satisfactory completion of the language course, participants will embark on their volunteer internship in an area of business of their choice. Internships are with local businesses working in the following sectors: Travel & Tourism / Law / Entertainment & the Arts / Information Technology / Engineering / Event Planning / Banking & Finance / Advertising / Architecture / Sales & Marketing. Interns will work for a minimum of 20 hours per week and for a minimum of 6 weeks (maximum 8 weeks). Following the internship, participants will have up to 60 days’ visa cover to spend exploring the USA.

  • $3250 (includes tuition, didactic materials, internship arrangements)
  • $200 registration fee (non-refundable)
  • $110 health insurance (or proof required of own cover)
  • $350 per week for a shared room in campus housing ($450 for a single room); prices do not include meals
  • $35 per day for half-board host-family housing (+ $200 placement fee)
